One Piece Anime Makes History With Its First American Episode Director

In a groundbreaking move, the One Piece anime series is venturing into new territory by enlisting American director Henry Thurlow to helm an episode. This marks the first time in the series’ extensive history that an American director has taken the helm.

American director, Henry Thurlow

Henry Thurlow, an American animator who currently resides and works in Japan, is slated to direct the 1066th episode of the One Piece anime series. This is a noteworthy occurrence as directorial positions in the industry are typically held by native Japanese individuals.

The news of Thurlow’s directorial role was initially reported in the July edition of Newtype magazine and was subsequently confirmed by the animator himself through a tweet on Twitter.

This groundbreaking appointment marks a significant milestone not only for the One Piece anime but also for Toei Animation, the production studio responsible for the series. Henry Thurlow’s selection as the director is unprecedented, as he becomes the first non-Japanese director to helm any television series produced by Toei Animation.

Thurlow boasts an impressive resume, having made notable contributions to esteemed projects like Sweetness & Lightning, Nurse Witch Komugi R, ClassicaLoid, Naruto Shippūden, and Tokyo Ghoul.

Having joined Toei Animation as an animator in July 2021, Thurlow has already made valuable contributions to both the ongoing One Piece series and the upcoming One Piece Film Red.

His first work on One Piece, happens in the episode #903. He animates this scene from Luffy Vs Urashima. From that scene, he begins to become a regular in the anime

While Thurlow’s contribution to the One Piece anime is historic, he is not the sole foreigner who has left a lasting impact on the anime industry.

Notable names such as Sunghoo Park, the South Korean director of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” Kyoung Soon Park, known for directing Doraemon movies, and D’Art Shtajio, a Tokyo-based studio founded by Americans, have all made significant contributions. D’Art Shtajio, for instance, has worked on diverse projects, including an episode of “Star Wars: Visions Volume 2.”

These examples highlight the increasingly global nature of the creative process behind anime, showcasing that while it is rooted in Japanese culture, it embraces talents and influences from around the world.

The highly anticipated directorial debut of Henry Thurlow will take place in episode 1066, scheduled to be aired on June 25. Based on the series’ recent adaptation pacing, it is expected that the episode will focus on the climactic battle between Trafalgar Law, Eustass Kid, and Big Mom.

Fans are filled with excitement and anticipation for this particular episode under Thurlow’s direction. They hold hopeful expectations that this cross-cultural collaboration could establish a precedent for future episodes and even entire series.

We’d love to hear your thoughts! Are you eagerly looking forward to this episode? Feel free to share your opinion in the comment section below.

Studio Ghibli’s Upcoming Film Will Have No Trailer, No Promotion

Studio Ghibli, known for its masterful and contemplative narratives, has made an unexpected choice regarding its forthcoming film release./

Anime Studio Ghibli

In a departure from conventional Hollywood-style promotion, the highly anticipated film “How Do You Live?”, helmed by the renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, is set to grace theaters without any trailers or traditional marketing strategies.

Making a bold statement, Studio Ghibli has chosen to rely solely on a solitary enigmatic poster, already unveiled, to generate anticipation and intrigue for the film.

New Anime Movie of Studio Ghibli

The choice to deviate from the conventional marketing playbook is not only a strategic move for Studio Ghibli but also a daring artistic decision.

During a recent interview, producer Toshio Suzuki, a longtime collaborator with Miyazaki, shed light on this unconventional strategy. He expressed that the team was aiming for a fresh approach, challenging the customary practices of excessive pre-release promotion.

Rather than following the traditional promotional route, they opted to let anticipation organically grow among their devoted fan base and the wider cinema-loving audience.]

Why There Will Be No Promotion?

During the interview, Producer Toshio Suzuki drew a parallel between their distinct approach and that of a contemporary American film set to release simultaneously.

He highlighted that the customary practice of unveiling multiple trailers often leads to revealing most of the plot, ultimately diluting the audience’s experience. In contrast, Studio Ghibli’s strategy focuses on nurturing curiosity and imagination, aligning with their long-standing tradition of upholding the enchanting essence of their storytelling.

The decision to confine promotional efforts to a lone poster received validation from none other than Miyazaki himself. Suzuki emphasized that Miyazaki’s approval of the poster played a crucial role in solidifying their plan.

Since the announcement of ‘How Do You Live?’ back in 2017, fans around the world have eagerly awaited its release. The film holds a deeply personal significance for Miyazaki, as he has previously expressed that it is a cinematic gift intended for his grandson—an emblematic “legacy” he wishes to leave behind as he takes a step back from filmmaking.

Release Date

The much-anticipated film “How do you live?” is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023, while international release dates are yet to be disclosed.

With the absence of trailers, teasers, or conventional promotional material, this unconventional strategy is poised to intensify the anticipation surrounding the film, while also emphasizing Studio Ghibli’s unwavering commitment to originality and imaginative storytelling.

This innovative approach may appear unorthodox to many, but it potentially signifies a return to the fundamental essence of the cinema experience. It invites audiences to enter the theater with fresh perspectives and open hearts, ready to immerse themselves in the enchantment and wonderment of the story.
