Auli’i Cravalho, the original voice actor for Moana in the 2016 animated film, will not be reprising her role in the upcoming live-action remake.

New Role
However, she is serving as an executive producer for the project. In a video posted on her Instagram, Cravalho explained that while Dwayne Johnson will be returning as the demigod Maui, the role of Moana will be played by a new actor.
She emphasized the importance of casting accurately to reflect the characters’ origins and expressed her honor in passing the baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent.
There is a possibility that Cravalho may still have a role in the live-action remake, potentially in a cameo appearance.
Many remakes include fun cameos for nostalgic purposes, so it wouldn’t be surprising if she makes an appearance in some capacity. However, this will depend on the progress of the film’s development.
Maui in “Moana,” made an announcement about Disney’s plans for a live-action remake of the film. Johnson, who will be involved as a producer, also expressed his intention to likely return to the role of Maui in the remake. He revealed that the character of Maui was inspired by his late grandfather, Peter Maivia, a wrestler and occasional actor.
The news of the live-action remake follows the immense impact of “Moana” in redefining Disney princesses, with its strong and resilient protagonist. Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original animated film, expressed her excitement about the remake, stating that she looks forward to presenting Moana’s story in a fresh and innovative manner.
“Moana” joins the list of Disney films receiving the live-action treatment, with the upcoming adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” also generating anticipation among audiences as the beloved character Ariel takes the center stage.
