Island, a much-awaited fantasy-action K-drama, will debut on Amazon Prime Video. According to the streaming service, 240 countries outside of South Korea will enjoy its December premiere while it streams locally.
Based on Yoon In-wan and Yang Kyung-il’s webtoon, which has the same title, Island is a fantasy action series. It tells the tale of characters battling an evil entity attempting to destroy the planet. The setting is on Korea’s tropical Jeju island. The series highlights the setting’s natural beauty while taking inspiration from Jeju’s stories and folklore.
YLab Flex, Studio Dragon, and Gilstory Ent produced the series. It features A-list actors namely Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo, and Sung-joon playing the leading roles. Oh Bo-hyin penned the script. And at the helm of the production is Bae Jong, who is also the director of Welcome to Dongmakgol and Fabricated City.
In order to draw in customers from all over the world, including Southeast Asia, a key growth market for the firm and a region with a keen interest in Korean content, Amazon Prime has been developing its library of commercially viable K-drama. Following the September release of the romantic comedy series Love in Contract on Prime Video, Amazon picked up the upcoming series.
According to Director of Prime Video in Southeast Asia David Simonsen, more information about the K-drama will be released in the coming weeks.
About the Webtoon, Island
The original comic was a collab between Yoon and Yang, and it was first released in 1997. It was an instant success.
Island was posted to the online Naver Webtoon platform six years ago. And then, 19 years after its initial release, it immediately became popular once more, bringing in a new generation of comic readers.
Producers express their desire to capitalize on the IP’s ongoing, cross-generational appeal with the 2022 TV series adaptation.
